Dianne Townsend Terrages and Soft Form PastelsMade in small batches and hand formed.
Diane Townsend Pastels originated in a New York City studio loft in 1971. Diane shared studio with a conservationist who translated a 15th century Italian formula for making pastels. This formula has evolved and been improved to become the basis of the Townsend pastels today. Diane started by making pastels for herself, some for friends, then for others and eventually for all of us. The smooth flowing application and dense pigmentation is what makes the pastels so well sought after. The pastels contain pumice which helps to disperse the pigment into the paper resulting in good adhesion.
Diane makes two main types of pastels which are currently available, Soft Form and Terrages.
Soft Form pastels are cigar shaped smooth flowing pastels that are desinged to fit well in the hand. They are easy to pick up, apply and put down.
Terrages pastels are much larger and made into a square shape that can accept a more vigorous and forceful application without crumbling. These pastels were developed in conjunction with Wolf Kahn to achieve the consistency he wanted.
Sets are currently available with singles to follow.
